This guide covers installing Evaldeck and its optional dependencies.

Requirements

  • Python 3.10 or later
  • pip (comes with Python)

Basic Installation

Install Evaldeck from PyPI:

pip install evaldeck

This installs the core package with:

  • CLI tools (evaldeck init, evaldeck run)
  • Trace and test case models

  • Built-in metrics

Optional Dependencies

LLM Graders

To use LLM-as-judge grading, install the provider you need:

pip install evaldeck[openai]

export OPENAI_API_KEY="sk-..."

pip install evaldeck[anthropic]

Set your API key:

export ANTHROPIC_API_KEY="sk-ant-..."

pip install evaldeck[all]

# For CrewAI
pip install openinference-instrumentation-crewai

# For OpenAI SDK
pip install openinference-instrumentation-openai

# For LiteLLM
pip install openinference-instrumentation-litellm

Verify Installation

Check that Evaldeck is installed correctly:

evaldeck --version

You should see:

evaldeck, version 0.1.0

Try the help command:

evaldeck --help

Output:

Usage: evaldeck [OPTIONS] COMMAND [ARGS]...

# Install in development mode with all dependencies
pip install -e ".[dev]"

Troubleshooting

Python Version Issues

If you see errors about Python version:

# Check your Python version
python --version

# Use a specific Python version
python3.11 -m pip install evaldeck

Permission Errors

If you get permission errors:

# Install in user space
pip install --user evaldeck

# Or use a virtual environment (recommended)
python -m venv myenv
source myenv/bin/activate
pip install evaldeck

Import Errors

If imports fail after installation:

# Ensure you're in the right environment
which python
pip show evaldeck

# Reinstall if needed
pip uninstall evaldeck
pip install evaldeck
